“By Studying the Masters”

When asked how he developed his mathematical abilities so rapidly, Abel replied "by studying the masters, not their pupils."

(Niels Henrik Abel)

"We should like to stress that these algebraic systems and the axioms which define them must have a certain naturalism about them. They must come from the experience of looking at many examples; they should be rich in meaningful results. One does not just sit down, list a few axioms, and then proceed to study the system so described. This, admittedly, is done by some, but most mathematicians would dismiss these attempts as poor mathematics. The systems chosen for study are chosen because particular cases of these structures have appeared time and time again, because someone finally noted that these special cases were indeed special instances of a general phenomenon, because one notices analogies between two disparate mathematical objects and so is led to a search for the root of these analogies." - I.N.Herstein.

The popular image of the lone (and possibly slightly mad) genius – who ignores the literature and other conventional wisdom and manages by some inexplicable inspiration (enhanced, perhaps, with a liberal dash of suffering) to come up with a breathtakingly original solution to a problem that confounded all the experts – is a charming and romantic image, but also a wildly inaccurate one, at least in the world of modern mathematics. We do have spectacular, deep and remarkable results and insights in this subject, of course, but they are the hard-won and cumulative achievement of years, decades, or even centuries of steady work and progress of many good and great mathematicians; the advance from one stage of understanding to the next can be highly non-trivial, and sometimes rather unexpected, but still builds upon the foundation of earlier work rather than starting totally anew.

Actually, I find the reality of mathematical research today – in which progress is obtained naturally and cumulatively as a consequence of hard work, directed by intuition, literature, and a bit of luck – to be far more satisfying than the romantic image that I had as a student of mathematics being advanced primarily by the mystic inspirations of some rare breed of “geniuses”. This “cult of genius” in fact causes a number of problems, since nobody is able to produce these (very rare) inspirations on anything approaching a regular basis, and with reliably consistent correctness. (If someone affects to do so, I advise you to be very sceptical of their claims.) The pressure to try to behave in this impossible manner can cause some to become overly obsessed with “big problems” or “big theories”, others to lose any healthy scepticism in their own work or in their tools, and yet others still to become too discouraged to continue working in mathematics. Also, attributing success to innate talent (which is beyond one’s control) rather than effort, planning, and education (which are within one’s control) can lead to some other problems as well.

"థియరీ వేరు, ప్రాక్టికల్స్ వేరు" - అసలు మోడల్ ఎందుకు అన్నదానికి Macroeconomics by DFS ఇచ్చిన సమాధానం ఇక్కడా అన్వయించుకోవచ్చు "Models are simplified representations of the real world. A good model accurately explains the behaviors that are most important to us and omits details that are relatively unimportant. The notion that the earth revolves around the sun on an elliptical path and that the moon similarly revolves around the earth is an example of a model. The exact behavior of sun, earth and moon is much more complicated, but this model enables us to understand the phases of the moon. For this purpose, it is a good model. Even though the real orbits are not simple ellipses, the model "works". A particular model is a tool based on a set of assumptions that are reasonable in some real world problems."

Einstein's Theory of relativity is a simple corollary to Grothendieck's Spectral Sequence.

He was not interested in the solving of difficult or famous problems, especially if it had to be done "by force", but his goal was to achieve such a deep and complete understanding of the underlying structures that the solutions of such problems would fall out "on their own". By doing so he rewrote Mathematics.

Relying on intelligence alone to pull things off at the last minute may work for a while, but, generally speaking, at the graduate level or higher it doesn’t.

One needs to do a serious amount of reading and writing, and not just thinking, in order to get anywhere serious in mathematics; contrary to public opinion, mathematical breakthroughs are not powered solely (or even primarily) by “Eureka” moments of genius, but are in fact largely a product of hard work, directed of course by experience and intuition.

It would be very pleasant if one could just dream up the grand ideas and let some “lesser mortals” fill in the details, but, trust me, it doesn’t work like that at all in mathematics; past experience has shown that it is only worth paying one’s time and attention to papers in which a substantial amount of detail and other supporting evidence (or at least a “proof-of-concept”) has already been carefully gathered to support one’s “grand idea”. If the originator of the idea is unwilling to do this, chances are that no-one else will do so either.

In short, there is no royal road to mathematics; to get to the “post-rigorous” stage in which your intuition matches well with what one can establish rigorously, one has to first invest real effort in learning and relearning the field, learning the strengths and weaknesses of tools, learning what else is going on in mathematics, learning how to solve problems rigorously, and answering lots of dumb questions, and so forth. This all requires hard work.

I am little bit surprised to know that people know Perelman. Recently he told that he will return to Mathematical world again, hope he will come back and resume his research. (Poincare COnjecture is still open problem in Higher dimensions), if you are interested look at http://www.kurims.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~motizuki/top-english.html, he is also another great, comparable with Prelman
